Statement on New Carbon Fiber Manufacturing Facility in Moses Lake

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement after BMW of North America, LLC, and SGL Group, announced the joint venture had selected Moses Lake, WA as the future home of its only carbon fiber manufacturing facility in North America, which will contribute to the production of a new series of energy efficient BMW vehicles.
“Washington state has a long history in advanced composite materials, based in aerospace and marine manufacturing, and this new carbon fiber facility will help cement our leadership as an advanced materials innovator. The joint venture will create up to 200 immediate construction jobs as well as 80 permanent manufacturing jobs with the potential for more in the next six years. This $100 million investment, including workforce training, will bolster the local and national economy.
“This is a clear example of how moving to a clean energy future will attract outside investment and spur economic and job growth.  I firmly believe that the clean energy industry is the largest economic opportunity of the 21st century, and Washington state can be a leader is this effort.”
