Cantwell Issues Statement on FCC Chair's Net Neutrality Announcement
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) issued the following statement following Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski’s announcement that he has circulated draft rules to his fellow Commissioners on the FCC’s Open Internet proceeding. A vote on the issue is expected at the Commission’s December 21st meeting.
“The Internet is being threatened by people who want to tax you unnecessarily, simply for gaining access to and using the Internet. We need strong net neutrality rules to protect consumers and preserve the open Internet. Chairman Genachowski has not yet made public the draft proposal underlying his announcement today, but based on his remarks, I am concerned that it is not as bold as it should be. We need a bold plan.”
For more information on Senator Cantwell’s efforts on net neutrality, see the following letters to Chairman Genachowski from June 17, 2010 and October 21, 2009.
