Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) made a stop in Selah Friday to visit Zirkle Fruit.

The senator highlighted the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012 which passed last month in the senate.

The farm bill strengthens production and exports of cherries and apples, huge crops in our region.

The bill also invests federal dollars in agricultural research to help scientists discover new ways to increase crop production.

"So as we see competition from other countries, figuring out how to grow more efficiently helps Washington crops continue to have an advantage," said Sen. Cantwell.

She is now working to get the bill passed in the House.

She says it will help strengthen agriculture in the U.S. and locally in the Yakima Valley.
