YAKIMA, Wash. - Senator Maria Cantwell stopped in Yakima Thursday to highlight the need for aerospace jobs in Washington. Cantwell toured the GE Aviation Plant which manufactures parts for the military and companies including Boeing.
The Washington Council on Aerospace says the state needs more than 20,000 new employees in the field.
Cantwell called on her fellow lawmakers in Congress to support aerospace training programs in the past.
"So people in Yakima should feel pretty proud that they were competitive on a global basis with another site, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell said. "And they were able to show that they could do that work cost effectively here. That's what manufacturing and basically business all around in a global economy is going to be."
Yakima is already the home to six companies with around 800 employees.
