Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell of Washington, along with U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer, released a joint statement last week in response to the U.S. Department of Defense’s list of military construction projects, including one at Naval Base Kitsap, that will be cut to fund construction of a border wall.
The NBK project includes the construction of a pier that supports the Maritime Force Protection Unit, which protects submarines and their crews on the way to and from the base. According to a news release, the project had the potential to create jobs and spur economic growth in Kitsap County.
“Each year, Congress works with the Department of Defense to fund priority military projects that are imperative to our national security,” the joint statement reads. “It is deeply disturbing to see the administration unilaterally raid funds from these vital projects in Washington and across to fund an ineffective, completely unnecessary border wall.
“Our men and women in uniform deserve better,” the statement read.
