Cantwell Announces Award For Kent School District
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) announced that the Kent School District has been chosen to receive a 2001 Victory Against Hunger Award. The prize is a $1000 cash award. Senator Cantwell nominated Kent School District for the award in recognition of their outstanding contribution toward the fight against hunger in Washington state.
"I congratulate everyone who participated in the Kent School District's efforts to fight hunger in the community," Cantwell said. "They do an important job, and I am pleased to have this opportunity to recognize their hard work. The Victory Against Hunger awards help to bring positive attention to the need that our communities are facing around the nation."
The theme of this year's award was "Fighting Hunger through Maximizing Use of the Summer Food Service Program." This theme was chosen because nearly fourteen million children are eligible for, but not participating in this program. Kent School District was honored for its work with the Summer Food Service Program.
The "Victory Against Hunger" Awards, sponsored by Victory Wholesale Grocers and the Congressional Hunger Center, were created to honor organizations at the local level that work to end hunger. Local organizations are nominated for the award by Members of Congress.
