Cantwell Celebrates the Realization of Marriage Equality in WA State
Cantwell: ‘Today is one for the history books’
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement celebrating Washington state’s marriage equality law taking effect today. Voters approved Referendum 74 on the November ballot, and Washington joined two other states in approving marriage equality by voter referendum.
“Today is one for the history books. For the first time, same-sex couples can obtain marriage licenses in Washington state,” said Cantwell. “By approving the right for same-sex couples to marry last month, Washingtonians showed the nation once again that we will continue to lead on equality. I look forward to continuing to support marriage equality at the federal level.”
