Cantwell: INS Inspectors to be Doubled Along Northern Border
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) today announced that her efforts to strengthen northern border security and efficiency had been included in the Defense and Emergency Supplemental appropriations conference report.
The bill more than doubles the number of INS inspectors along the northern border with an additional 500 personnel. It also increases the number of Border Patrol agents by 60 percent, adding 200 agents. $449.7 million in additional funding is included in the emergency supplemental.
"Strengthening the northern border is critical for both our security and our economic health," Cantwell said. "These staffing increases along the northern border help protect us against terrorism and enhance our ability to trade with Canada."
"This as much a boost for our economy as it is for our security," Cantwell said. "Blaine is the third busiest port of entry along the Northern Border. But since September 11, traffic has plummeted and delays have skyrocketed, threatening businesses and jobs. This legislation will help stabilize the economies of Blaine and communities like. It is a big win for businesses and jobs in Washington state."
"Senator Patty Murray, Representative Rick Larsen, and the Senate coalition of northern border senators worked hard to secure this increased funding."
