Cantwell-Murray Election Reform Amendment Passes Senate

WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell's (D-WA) amendment to the election reform legislation before the Senate was adopted unanimously. The Cantwell-Murray amendment protects the right of voters in Washington state and other states to cast their ballots by mail.

The legislation before the Senate establishes new safeguards in polling places designed to catch mistakes on ballots before the votes are disqualified. The Cantwell-Murray amendment protects the mail-in voting system by setting out alternative safeguards for mail-in ballots including a requirement that each voter receive clear instructions about how to fill out the ballot, and how to obtain a replacement ballot in the event a mistake is made.

"The Cantwell-Murray amendment clearly and unambiguously protects the right of Washington and other states to continue to use mail-in voting systems," Cantwell said. "It also sets new standards that ensure voters receive clear instructions about how to properly fill out their ballot and make sure their vote is counted. The Cantwell-Murray amendment is tremendously important to voters who rely on mail-in ballots to exercise their right to vote."

"We have a system in Washington that works well for our voters, and I am pleased that the Senate will respect our system," Murray said. "This amendment will protect the rights of Washington's citizens to participate in their government."
