Cantwell, Murray, Kilmer Announce $3.9M Federal Grant for Kitsap Transit
Funding will help Kitsap Transit purchase electric transit buses, build charging infrastructure
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), and U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (D, WA-06) announced that Kitsap Transit will receive $3.9 million from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the purchase of electric transit buses. The funding will help Kitsap Transit add five battery-electric buses to its fleet. Earlier this year, Cantwell, Murray, and Kilmer wrote to the Acting Administrator of the FTA in support of Kitsap Transit’s grant application.
“Federal funding would replace five conventional diesel buses with battery-electric heavy-duty buses and critical charging infrastructure,” the members wrote in their letter of support in February. “These steps will support Kitsap Transit’s operational objectives in line with statewide goals to adopt alternative fuels for public transportation vehicles.”
Electric technology significantly improves Kitsap Transit’s operations, lowers costs, and preserves the environment while providing safe, reliable and affordable public transportation options for riders,” the members concluded.
