Cantwell Responds to President's Cuba Initiative

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) today made the following statement in response to President Bush's Cuba initiative:

"I share the President's call for increased political freedoms for the Cuban people, but I believe that the way to affect these changes is not through social, political and economic isolation. We should be taking steps toward engagement with the Cuban people, which will help build economic and political relationships that emphasize the value of democracy and free markets in Cuba and around the world.

"Moreover, Cuba is an emerging market for U.S. products, particularly Washington state apples, peas, and lentils. Opening markets in Cuba is win-win: Washingtonians sell their products and Cubans are exposed to new social, political, and economic ideas."
