Cantwell says new jobs data shows need for unemployment benefit extension

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) today made the following statement in response to the monthly employment report issued by the Washington State Employment Security Department:

"Today's unemployment figures underscore the urgency to pass an extension of unemployment benefits. Clearly, these new figures show the economy has not yet turned the corner. While we work to promote long-term job growth, we must not forget the immediate needs of our state's population. Too many people are having trouble finding work and need a little extra help while they look for a job in a tough economy."

"According to figures released by the Employment Security Department, Washington's jobless rate in September reached 7.4 percent, perhaps the highest in the nation. At a nine-year high, the state's unemployment rate has increased by 50 percent over the last three years."

"The Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act of 2002 would extend federally funded unemployment benefits for individuals by 33 weeks in high-unemployment states like Washington and by 13 weeks in all other states. The entire Washington state congressional delegation has supported an extension."

"The time for Congress to act is now."
