Cantwell Statement on Bush Budget Blueprint

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Maria Cantwell made the following statement regarding President George W. Bush’s budget blueprint which was released today:

"I share the president’s desire to cut taxes and invest in national priorities like education and prescription drug coverage. I also believe we must cover current responsibilities such as the Hanford cleanup, the Export Import Bank, social security and paying down the debt. The president’s budget, however, appears to shortchange these critical responsibilities.

During the confirmation hearings for Energy Secretary Abraham, the administration pledged to make the Hanford cleanup a priority and to provide full funding. We just can’t afford to sacrifice this critical project.

I am also concerned about the massive cuts proposed for the Export-Import bank. The U.S. Export-Import Bank and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation are critical to maintaining U.S. competitiveness in the international economy through financing assistance that increases U.S. exports and provides jobs to American workers. The proposed cut could be devastating to companies like Boeing and undermine our effort to keep our economy going."
