Cantwell Statement on Devastating New Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement on the report on climate change and its projected effects on the Pacific Northwest from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released today:

“This groundbreaking report makes clear that the extreme weather now being felt around the globe and across Washington state will look mild compared to what’s ahead if we don’t act. It's like a disease diagnosis that can no longer be ignored or delayed, but fortunately the cure, moving past fossil fuels, will not only save our planet, it will make our air and water cleaner, provide more reliable and affordable energy, and create millions of new jobs.

“The next generation deserves to be able to enjoy the bliss of a Puget Sound summer day, not be trapped inside by triple digit temperatures and smoky skies. The next generation deserves to be able to ski in the Cascades or snorkel a coral reef or see a polar bear in the wild. The next generation deserves a planet that nurtures and sustains, not threatens and destroys.

“I am pleased the Senate is about to pass a once-in-a-generation infrastructure package with historic levels of funding to tackle the climate crisis. But we must do more in the coming months to further accelerate our transition to clean energy by making additional investments and pricing carbon pollution."
