Cantwell Statement on Oil Train Derailment along Columbia River Gorge in Oregon

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) issued the following statement after 6 tank cars hauling Bakken crude derailed along the Columbia River Gorge near the town of Mosier, Oregon causing a fire and prompting the shutdown of a highway and a local elementary school.

“Today’s incident is a stark reminder of the danger that tank cars carrying crude and hazardous materials present to our communities. These accidents have become far too common in our country. Thankfully, no one has been reported injured,” said Senator Cantwell. “We can’t delay enacting stronger rules any further. We have to protect residents and first responders from the shipment of highly flammable fuels traveling across our nation and through populated areas with increasing frequency.”
