Cantwell Statement on the Deployment of JBLM Unit to Afghanistan

Cantwell: ‘We are proud of I Corps’ service to this great nation’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement on the upcoming deployment of Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s (JBLM) I Corps Headquarters unit to Afghanistan. The base held a flag ceremony Thursday morning to honor the I Corps’ movement to a new theater of operation. Lt. Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti leads the unit of 700 troops.

“Today in Tacoma we honor the heroic service of Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s I Corps Headquarters unit,” Senator Cantwell said. “In July, led by Lt. Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, the unit will once again deploy to the battlefield, this time joining the fight in Afghanistan at the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command (ISAFJC). These troops are tasked with the very important job of equipping and guiding the command at ISAFJC at a critical stage as we begin a draw-down of American forces. JBLM has prepared and trained them well, and I know they will achieve great success in their mission.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of these soldiers, as they serve our country. On behalf of all Washingtonians and Americans, I thank the soldiers of the I Corps for their selfless service, and wish them a successful mission and safe return. We are proud of I Corps’ service to this great nation.”
