Cantwell Statement on Vote to Move Forward on Immigration Reform Bill
Cantwell: ‘It’s time to fix the broken immigration system’
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement after the Senate voted 84-15 to move forward to consider the Border Security Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act (S.744) and proposed amendments. Cantwell voted for the motion to proceed to the bill.
"It's past time for Congress to move forward on comprehensive immigration reform," Cantwell said. “Washington state families, high-tech businesses, law enforcement and farmers have spoken with a clear voice: It’s time to fix the broken immigration system. Washington state’s economy is counting on Congress to act and restore common-sense to our immigration system.
“Today’s vote is a strong bipartisan signal that the U.S. Senate is ready to move forward on this critical issue,” Cantwell added. “I will continue to support immigration reform that strengthens border security and develops a realistic pathway to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants here in America. And I look forward to hearing more from Washingtonians as this important debate continues.”
