Senator Cantwell's Bill to Preserve Vancouver Barracks Clears Senate Hurdle

WASHINGTON, DC - A bill which would authorize $10 million for the preservation of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Reserve has been passed by the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. Senator Maria Cantwell, who is a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, offered the bill, S.1649.

"Fort Vancouver is a key historic landmark not only for southwest Washington, but for the entire western United States," said Cantwell. "We have an obligation to future generations to preserve Fort Vancouver, and this bill will do just that."

The Fort Vancouver National Historic Reserve includes Fort Vancouver, the Vancouver Barracks, Officers' Row, Pearson Field, the Water Resources Education Center, and portions of the Columbia River waterfront.

The Senate is expected to act upon Cantwell's legislation this summer. Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA) has similar legislation pending in the House.
