Senator Cantwell's Statement on DOE's Order to Stop Hanford Clean Up

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, requested a meeting with Secretary Spencer Abraham on today's announcement that DOE shut down cleanup activities that allegedly produce "mixed waste."

Cantwell said:

"By going to the press, DOE appears to be trying to negotiate Hanford clean up with Washington state through the news media. These tactics are entirely unacceptable. DOE has a legally binding obligation to clean up Hanford and we will hold it accountable."
