Senator Cantwell’s Statement on Scientific Validation of Kennewick Man’s Native American Ancestry

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell released the following statement after the Army Corps of Engineers validated that Kennewick Man is Native American.

“I am pleased that the Army Corps of Engineers finally determined that Kennewick Man is Native American.  The 14-page determination released earlier today shows that the Corps has carefully reviewed and thoroughly analyzed all of the available scientific evidence, including the results of the DNA testing published last year. Today’s decision is a major step toward repatriating Kennewick Man to the tribes who claim him as their own.  I will continue to work with the Corps to urge them to take the final step and proceed quickly to determine cultural affiliation, so that the remains can finally return home.”
