Senator Maria Cantwell's Statement on the Release of the American Crew From China

Today I join all Americans in expressing my joy and relief that the 24 American servicemen and servicewomen who were held in China will soon be en route back to the United States. Throughout this ordeal, these soldiers conducted themselves with tremendous bravery and professionalism. They did their jobs remarkably well, and they made America proud. I recently spoke with the Commanding Officer of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Captain Larry Salter, as well as the Wing Commander, Commander Bernie Lassard, to express my hopes for a speedy return to Whidbey for the crew as well as to offer any further assistance as the crew begins their journey home.

I know that this has been a trying time for the families of the detained soldiers, and I eagerly anticipate welcoming the crew back to Washington state as soon as possible. The Whidbey community and the people of the State of Washington have given tremendous support to the families of the crew throughout this ordeal.

Finally, I’d like to commend both the administration and the Chinese government for negotiating a diplomatic end to this difficult situation.
