Senator Maria Cantwell's Statement on the State of the Union

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) today issued the following statement in response to President Bush's State of the Union speech:

"President Bush was resolute in conveying the conviction of the American people to remain united in the war against terrorism.

"I was pleased to the hear details of the President's homeland security initiative, particularly his plans to strengthen border security. A strong northern border is critical both for our security and our economy and I think the President's plan moves us in the right direction. I am committed to working with the President and the coalition of northern border Senators to ensure a secure and efficient northern border.

"I also believe that rebuilding our economy and putting people back to work must be Congress's top agenda item. As we debate economic stimulus legislation, we must prioritize supporting American workers over bailing out corporations."
