Statement on Secretary Abraham's FFTF Decision
Today, Secretary Abraham announced his decision that the "restart of the FFTF is impracticable and that the Department will proceed with the deactivation of the facility."
Although FFTF has been kept on hot stand-by status since 1993, there have been several proposals to restart it, including for the research and production of medical isotopes, which hold promise for the treatment of cancer.
Throughout this process, Senator Cantwell has consistently asked that any decision regarding the restart of FFTF be scientifically based and be conducted with an open and fair process. Without evidence to the contrary, Senator Cantwell believes Secretary Abraham's review met these standards and consequently accepts his decision.
Senator Cantwell remains strongly committed to the economic success of the Tri-cities region and will continue to work for sustainable jobs and worker training in the area.
