TSA Federalization to Include Tri-Cities Airport

WASHINGTON, DC - The Transportation Security Administration will begin federalizing the next 77 airports, including the Tri-Cities Airport, the week of July 15, 2002. By the end of the week, TSA will have begun work at 269 airports.

"The traveling public deserves the best possible security at all of America's airports," Cantwell said. "I'm hopeful airports will continue to be federalized as the deadline approaches to bring security procedures at all airports under control of the TSA."

The TSA will begin studies for federalizing passenger screening and baggage screening checkpoints for the airports. The TSA has a November 19 deadline for a completely federalized screening force, and a December 31 deadline for installing explosive device detectors. In order to meet these deadlines, the TSA must accomplish three things at each airport to be brought under federal control: a survey of the airports to establish the best placement for checkpoints and baggage screening areas; reconfiguration of the screening areas to serve the interests of security and safety for the public; and put in place federal screeners.
