Cantwell Statement on the Passing of U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement on the passing of U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI):

"Senator Inouye was a giant among Senators.  From Watergate to fighting for Native Hawaiian rights, he came to the Senate every day to fight for justice. He led the fight to pass national legislation recognizing the Nisei Veterans' contributions to our country during World War II.

"He was a mountain of a man. He was an old school Senator who was courteous and respectful to all Senators no matter what the circumstance.

"Senator Inouye was a great friend to the state of Washington on salmon, Native American, maritime and defense issues. He knew Scoop and Maggie had helped secure statehood for Hawaii -- and he consequently was always looking out for Patty and me, and was a personal mentor to me.

"Senator Inouye was a one-of-a-kind human being, who exemplified unbelievable courage and bravery during World War II. His service to our country will never be forgotten and will be impossible to match."
