Cantwell Statement on WTO Ruling on Airbus Subsidies

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement today following a ruling by the World Trade Organization (WTO) that European subsidies to Airbus break WTO rules:

“Today's WTO decision against Airbus' unfair subsidies is a victory for U.S. manufacturers and all who support true market competition. President Trump is wrong. The WTO did not rule to make President Trump ‘happy.’ They demonstrated that building world support for a rules-based trade regime that calls out anti-market competition through unfair subsidies is critical to having a truly competitive global marketplace.

The European Union and Airbus now need to reach a comprehensive agreement with the United States to end trade-distorting subsidies and avoid these tariffs.”

The WTO awarded the United States $7.5 billion annually after nearly 15 years of litigation found that illegal subsidies to Airbus by the European Union had negatively impacted American aerospace companies.
