Rare Copy of Declaration of IndependenceTo Visit Pacific Northwest
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) today heralded the upcoming visit of a rare copy of the Declaration of Independence to Seattle and Portland as a unique opportunity for Washingtonians.
"During these turbulent times, recognizing America's history is more important than ever," Cantwell said. "This is an extraordinary chance for students and their families to see one of our nation's treasures and a key piece of American history."
After members of the Continental Congress signed the original Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, 200 copies, or "broadsides," were produced and riders carried them around the colonies to spread the word. One of the original broadsides of the Declaration of Independence will soon tour the Pacific Northwest, with stops in Seattle and Portland.
From August 23 through September 1, the Declaration of Independence will be on display at Seattle's Museum of History and Industry. From September 20 through September 28, it will be in Portland at the Oregon Historical Society.
